How To Clean Your Desk in 7 Simple Steps

We’ve all seen the headlines: ‘Your desk is dirtier than a toilet seat!’. The workspace that you sit at, work from, and even eat at is much dirtier than you might think, so don’t take any chances when it comes to office hygiene. Here are the 7 simple steps you can take to clean your desk and deal with any bacteria quickly, even after a busy day in the office.

How To Keep Your Desk Clean

Cleaning a desk properly starts with not letting it get messy in the first place!

Follow these 3 steps over the next few days and see the difference they make.

1. Don’t Eat At Your Desk

It might be hard to find the time to grab a bite to eat whilst rushing to meet a 6pm deadline, but try to avoid eating at your desk.

It might seem more time-efficient to do this, but having lunch at your desk will only clutter up the surface and increase the number of germs present. Your keyboard, phone, and mouse catch bacteria from busy fingers all day long (especially if you work from a shared desk), whilst crumbs can easily become lodged between the keys on the keyboard or the pages of an important file.

Avoid eating at your desk and see how much easier it is to focus when there aren’t crumbs, wrappers, and forgotten tupperware lying around!

2. Digitise Your Documents

Do you really need to keep that report from 3 years ago within reach, or can it find a new home in the store cupboard?

If your desk is piled high with old documents that you’ve lost track of (but you just KNOW are important) then it’s time to go through them all and file them away. Keep a few folders on your desk or in your drawer, and file all of the documents that need to be regularly reviewed in here, but don’t let them clutter up your desk any longer.

Many businesses are also digitising their documents now to make them easier to track, audit, and find. Online databases are a great way to access the documents you need, when you need them, so say goodbye to stacks of paper taking up space and hello to a more efficient storage solution.

3. Get Into A Habit

Finally, giving your desk a quick clean every day is much better than having to deep clean it once it is visibly messy.

Set aside a few minutes at the end of every workday to quickly:

  • Bin any clutter.
  • File away papers.
  • Recycle all unneeded documents.

And look forward to a clean and tidy desk each and every morning, rather than a reminder of the busy day before.

4. Clear The Clutter

First, start by moving everything off your desk.

This doesn’t mean your desktop monitor if it will take longer to move this than it will to clean the desk, but it does involve:

  • Removing papers, documents, and files.
  • Organising all wires and cables.
  • Clearing away any food containers.

And placing all of your office items, such as pens, phones, and notebooks onto a different surface.

5. Sanitise The Surface

Once there are no more items left on your desk it’s time to spray it down with an appropriate solution and leave it to sit for a few minutes.

Some cleaning chemicals need time to cut through bacteria, so make sure that you leave them for the recommended time before wiping the desk down with a microfibre cloth. Focus on any patches of grime, smudges from copier inks, or coffee rings left behind by your mug, and don’t forget to wipe down the underside of the desk to get rid of any lingering germs.

Once this is done, check that the desk is dry, and then put all the items back in their places.

6. Clean The Essentials

Now that the desk itself is clean, all that’s left to do is clean everything else!

Use a screen cleaning wipe to wipe down your computer and phone screens, before sanitising your:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Pens
  • Chargers

And any other items that you or others in your office regularly use. If you have any time left once this is done, we also highly recommend cleaning the handles and switches around your desk to prevent any bacteria from encroaching on your workstation.
